Claas in Dawlish

24/1/2013. Dawlish - UK

Don't get too many tractors in Dawlish and I nearly missed this Claas.
Can anyone tell me what the tank is for on the side of the trailer and also the extra small wheels, assuming there is another on the other side, please.

It's a lot of years since I sold farm machinery but wearing my "trock" hat I reckon that the extra wheel is for a lifting axle - a pusher axle actually - used (lowered) when the trailer is fully laden to avoid axle overload on axles 2 & 3 on the trailer. The tank is presumably an air tank for the air brakes and for the raise/lower on the lift axle. Normal agricultural tractor/trailer combinations are restricted to 24390 kg and 20 mph. It seems to be a slightly grey area but soeeds/weights may be increased subject to various requirements and the additional axle may satisfy certain rules.
